1-2 : The Myth of a Quick Fix
When faced with quality issues, many business leaders look for solutions that will “work immediately.”
They want to reduce defects, stop complaints, and restore stability on the shop floor as quickly as possible.
That instinct is entirely natural—especially for those who carry responsibility for the business and feel pressure to deliver results fast.
However, the reality is clear: there is no quick fix for quality problems.
While it may be possible to improve short-term metrics, this does not change the underlying profit structure. As a result, the same issues often reappear in different forms.
What we need to reconsider is how we define quality issues in the first place.
In this series, we look beyond manufacturing to include service industries as well. If we define the “product” as the value delivered to the customer, then quality represents both the company’s credibility and the foundation that supports its revenue.
And what sustains that quality is not temporary, reactive measures, but consistent fundamentals and well-designed systems.
In other words, quality problems should not be seen as isolated incidents, but as symptoms of distortions within the profit structure.
There are three key points.
1. Discipline in the fundamentals
Adhering to the basics of quality management may seem like a slow path, but it is in fact the most reliable route to improving profitability.
Are standards being followed? Are roles clearly defined? Have checks and confirmations become mere formalities?
Instability in these fundamentals leads to waste and rework, driving up costs and eroding profit.
Most problems arise not from a lack of advanced expertise, but from a failure to maintain the basics.
Strengthening the fundamentals is both quality improvement and profit improvement.
2. Managing processes as a core management function
PDCA is not just a tool for the shop floor—it is a management system for generating profit.
Are plans realistic? Are evaluations going beyond numbers? Are improvements embedded into the system?
When organizations focus only on results, improvements tend to be temporary.
But when the process itself is designed to function continuously, quality stabilizes, costs decrease, and profit accumulates over time.
3. Redefining the meaning of problems
When a problem occurs, do you see it as something to eliminate quickly, or as a clue to reexamine your profit structure?
This perspective shapes the future of the organization.
A focus on quick fixes leads to repeated, superficial solutions.
In contrast, viewing problems structurally allows not only recurrence prevention, but also fundamental improvement of the revenue model itself.
Quality issues are both a burden and an opportunity for business leaders.
By reinforcing the fundamentals, refining processes, and continuously learning from problems, organizations can reshape their cost structures, build customer trust, and strengthen their profitability.
There is no instant cure.
But efforts that transform underlying structures are the most reliable prescription for generating sustainable profit.
